Vyborg is a town in western Russia, close to the Finnish border. Set on an island in Vyborg Bay, Vyborg Castle was built in the 13th century by Swedes. Today it houses a regional history museum. To the southeast, Hermitage-Vyborg Center exhibits paintings and artifacts from the State Hermitage Museum collection in St. Petersburg. Northwest of town, landscaped Monrepos Park is dotted with monuments and grottoes.
Vyborg is a town that lies ~130 km northwest of St. Petersburg, ~245 km east of Helsinki, and around 40 km east of the Finnish-Russian border. The town was founded in the 1200s and has changed hands many times, reflected in the various variations of its name: Russian: Выборг [ˈvɨbərk] Finnish: Viipuri [ˈʋiːpuri] Swedish: Viborg [ˈvǐːbɔrj] German: Wiborg [ˈviːbɔʁk]) The town has a population of around 80 000 residents.
In this video we will take a walk in the central part of Vyborg and look at old Finnish and Swedish houses, as well as the architecture of the Russian Empire.

Vyborg — this small town was founded at the end of the 13th century by the Swedes and at various times belonged to Russia, Sweden and Finland. Many medieval buildings have survived in Vyborg. The mixture of architectural styles and different cultures creates a unique image of the city. Along with Kaliningrad, it is called “the most European city in Russia”. In this virtual walking tour we'll visit all the streets of the historical downtown including the medieval Vyborg castle.
Contact: vk.com/mishanya9 instagram.com/mikhailproskalov mik.proskalov🤍gmail.com
The Old #Vyborg Market is a very beautiful building in the city center, built in 1905. At the beginning of the XX century, the market became one of the largest in all of Scandinavia. Its central symmetrical facade with the main gate reached 20 m wide, and behind the interior space with trade rows stretched more than 130 m long. In this walking tour we'll follow two main aisles of this Vyborg #bazaar. Hope you enjoy! Monrepos (translated from the French Mon Repos — "my rest") is a rocky landscape park on the shore of the Protective Bay of the Vyborg Bay, on the island of Tverdysh in the northern part of the city of Vyborg in the Leningrad region. The official name is the State Historical, Architectural and Natural Museum—Reserve "Monrepos Park". Monrepos Park is located near Vyborg on the coast of the Protective Bay of Vyborg Bay in the northwestern part of Tverdysh Island. The area of the park is 161.4371 hectares . The historical core of the museum-reserve is the estate and park ensemble of the late XVIII - early XIX centuries. It includes monuments of wooden architecture of classicism (the main manor house and Library wing) and a landscape rock park of romantic style — a unique monument of landscape art, which was created by architects D. Martinelli, O. Montferrand, T. de Thomon, A. Stackenschneider, C. H. Tatham [en] (Eng. Charles Heathcote Tatham), artists Ya. Mettenleiter and P. Gonzago, sculptors I. Takanen, G. Borup[fi] (fin. Gotthelf Borup), garden masters I. Biesterfeld and Zweiger. The historical part of the park organically turns into a forest park — a zone of valuable natural landscape, which is located in a special physical and geographical region - Fennoscandia. This territory consists of two large plots adjacent to the historical core of the park from the south and north. It is characterized by unique Ice Age stone ridges of rapakivi granites (Karel. rapakivi — "rotten stone"), in some areas reaching a height of 20 m.

Wait what?! Finnish-Swedish town in Russia? Viipuri had changed names and territories too many times: first it was Swedish, then Russian, in 1917 Finnish and then, in 1944 became a Russian city again. Once it was a cosmopolitain city: Germans, Russians, Swedes, Finns living peacefully together. Then many wars and conflicts took place..and at the end the city became part of USSR. As some describe, this turned the Finnish dream into Soviet ruin. Is it in such a bad condition as represented in the media? Do Russian people feel like at home there and do they care about the Scandinavian past? The park lies along the shoreline of the Zashchitnaya inlet of the Vyborg Bay in Vyborg, Russia, about 129 kilometres (80 mi) from St. Petersburg and occupies about 180 hectares (440 acres) of land. Between 1788, when Ludwig Heinrich von Nicolai bought it, and 1943, "Monrepos" was owned by the family of Baron Nicolai (better Nicolay). The historic core of the museum complex is a manor from the early 19th century. This consists of the Main house and the Library house, monuments of wooden classical architecture, and the landscape rock park designed in the romantic style, and which remains a unique monument of gardening art. Among the park designers were such architects as J. Martinelli, Auguste de Montferrand, A. Shtakenshneider, Ch. Tetam, artists Ya. Mattenleiter, and P. Gonzago. The area of the park is marked by special physical and geographical features, like the old Wiborgite granite, which is named after Vyborg, and glacial formations of up to 20 metres (66 ft) high. In this nature reserve, 50 species of different plants can be found, some of them being rare. Its fauna is diverse as well: the park abounds in numerous birds and animals.

Once a busy medieval trading hub, Vyborg has fallen into ruin. This Russian city was established in 2193 and was a major trading centre between the East and West and had Russian, Swedish and Finnish influences. It was a rich architectural and archaeological heritage but was damaged during World War II. And after that, it was neglected for years. The World Monuments Watch has included the city on its list of 50 world heritage sites under the threat of extinction. Despite the richest coal deposits that gave boost to the development of the city, Vorkuta and the adjacent settlements are rapidly emptying today. The mega project of the Soviet machine was not in demand among the heirs of the empire. Today, some districts of Vorkuta and surrounding villages are abandoned or are about to be completely deserted. How is Vorkuta living today? What's going on around her? What are the prospects for the main coal mining region in the north of Russia? I personally went to the Arctic to answer these questions. Today we are welcomed to the beautiful historic city of Hamina, Finland. This street walk marks part 1 of 2 in the Hamina series. The city is not only unique because of its circular center design. It is also the city with the largest flag in Finland. in fact it is the largest flagpole in all of Europe! (14th in the world) The gigantic flagpole reaches a height of 100 meters. While the flag is the same size as an official basketball court (445 square meters, 16.5 x 27 meters), and weighs more than 30 kg. It represents Finland's 100th anniversary of independence and was established in 2019. Today a strong wind from the sea has no problem making the flag dance. Hamina is known for its long tradition as a proud military town. The Army Reserve Officers School is located inside and just outside the city walls. About 1500 conscripts from all over the country are trained annually. Hamina is a seaside town located in southeastern Finland. The port of HaminaKotka is the second largest commercial port in Finland. Highway 7 (E18) is the road connection to Helsinki, about 145 km (90 mi) east of the country's capital. More than 20,000 inhabitants populate the municipality. More than 95% are Finnish-speakers, Swedish-speakers represent less than 1%. One of Google's 5 European data centers is situated in Hamina. As i mentioned before, the city center was build in a circular design. The entire city was destroyed by the Great Northern War (1712). When the vibrant city of Vyborg was lost to Russia in 1721, Hamina (Fredrikshamn) was dedicated to replace it. The reconstruction of the town was completed between 1722 and 1724. Based on Central European and Italian Renaissance concepts from the 16th century. Around the same time, construction of the unique star-shaped fortress began. However, in 1743 Hamina was surrendered to Russia, after the Russo-Swedish War (1741-1743). After which the town of Loviisa became the next Swedish stronghold. The splitting of Finland from Sweden took place in 1819 after the Treaty of Fredrikshamn (Hamina). Becoming the Grand Duchy of Finland of the Russian Empire. The most notable sights include the Town Hall which is located in the center of the circle. Originally built in 1798, it was renovated by Carl Ludvig Engel in 1840. The Reserve Officers School, the Town Museum, Hamina Fortress and the 3 churches around the center. Perhaps the most famous Finn known outside of Finland, Simo Häyhä, also known as "The White Death", spent his last years in Hamina. In the next video we visit the beautiful Oolanni park and the Hamina guest marina. Thanks for joining. I hope to continue our conversation soon.
