Devlin shared never before seen sketches with the Design Indaba audience and gave a deeper insight into her process. With a career spanning two decades, Devlin had no shortage of pioneering work to share with the audience. But even so, she responded generously. Digging up old, never before seen sketches, early iterations of her work, that gave us deeper insight into the process of Kanye West, Beyonce and Adele’s chief stage designer. It started with a look into her early years. Her chief influences were the anarchic Pagan rituals in her hometown of Sussex juxtapositioned with the more organised rituals of her more traditional church. There, she learned to design in series, to mix anarchy with process. These experiences would embed themselves within her, she says, before jumping into the many sketches that make up her impressive resume. Iteration upon iteration would develop while workshopping stage designs with her collaborators, which also includes, U2, The Weeknd and more. But not all her ideas would come to fruition, she explains. It’s about creating the visual voice of the artist, learning a particular artist’s traits and making those traits come alive on stage. For Adele, the artist’s face, particularly her eyes, became the focal point for the persona the singer had cultivated. For Kanye West, nature and arena combined to create stage sets that reflected the enigmatic rapper’s colossal presence. For The Weeknd, what became important was his journey which Devlin reflected within a massive aeroplane-like structure. But while the artist’s persona is integral to the design, Devlin also harnesses another element: the audience. “What I’m crafting, my clay, is the audiences anticipation. Every moment that they’ve spent there; they’ve slept outside to get that seat, they’ve saved up money, whatever they’ve done to get there. Much of my craft is how to meet that anticipation – how to not fuck it up.” Her most recent project is The Singing Tree (below), which she did for the V&A Museum in London. From Kanye West’s iconic mountain to the multi-screened portal into the soul of Adele, Devlin has been behind some of the most renowned stage designs. Her work goes further than that too. As a creator of performative spaces, she designed The Singing Tree for the V&A Museum in London. The tree was part of an annual experiential celebration of Christmas where Devlin used machine learning to collect thousands of words from the public. All the contributions were combined and processed by an algorithm trained on 25 million words of 19th century poetry. The result was a constantly regenerating carol that is complemented by an interactive choir of human and synthesised voices in what Devlin called “an invitation for our machines to sing along with us”. It was viewed by over ten million visitors during Christmas 2017. Es Devlin is a multi award winning international stage designer whose work crosses a wide range of genres including drama, dance, opera and pop. Es has created stage designs for Kanye West and Jay Z's Watch the Throne Tour, Berlioz's epic opera 'Les Troyens' at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden and the Closing Ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games. Other adventures have included tours for Lady Gaga, MUSE, the Pet Shop Boys and Take That; operas at La Scala, Barcelona and Vienna; and drama for the Royal Shakespeare Company, National Theatre and Theatre de Complicite. Es works from her studio in London with a small team of associates who, like her, are used to modulating between the worlds of opera, rap, drama and pop. She was awarded TPi Stage Designer of the Years 2010, 2011 and 2012, the Olivier Award in 2006 and RED Creative Woman of the Year 2011. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. Your Voices, an illuminated public sculpture by Es Devlin at the Lincoln Center’s Josie Robertson Plaza in New York represented it as the “most linguistically diverse city on the planet”. Currently, over 700 languages are currently spoken here, and this was represented within the irradiated installation made of 700 glowing cords of webbing straps tensioned between a series of structural steel arcs. A revolving illuminated network was created, rotating north, south, east, and west through a multilingual soundscape which interweaves languages drawn from all over the city, from Algerian, Arabic, Alsation, Azeri, and Ashanti to Zapotec, Zarma, and Zulu. The Olivier Awards with Mastercard are not only world-renowned, they’re the most sought-after and highly regarded accolade in British theatre. The awards have always marked true theatrical greatness and celebrated excellence in the industry. However, they have not always been how we know them today. In 1976, the Society of West End Theatre (now known as the Society of London Theatre (SOLT) created an eponymous awards ceremony to celebrate the very best performers and creatives in the West End. Es Devlin began her artistic career as a set designer for theatre. In the 30 years that have followed, her practice has evolved to encompass the creation of stage sculptures for musicians including Kanye West and Beyonce, as well as immersive installations such as 2016’s Mirror Maze and global events including the London 2021 Olympics closing ceremony. Devlin’s latest installtion is ‘BLUESKYWHITE’, a large-scale work commissioned by 180 Studios, which is currently showing at LUX: New Wave of Contemporary Art, a new exhibition co-curated by Fact and SUUM Project. The work combines light, music and language, and was conceived as a sculptural expression of our emotional response to the possible extinction of blue sky. The installation is formed of two parts: In Part I, text from Byron's 1816 poem Darkness underscores the viewer's passage through a 24m long red-lit tunnel. Part II draws from contemporary solar geo-engineering models documented by Elizabeth Kolbert and others which suggest that a haze of suspended particles might reduce global temperature to pre-industrial levels and might also turn the blue sky white. In this film, we speak to Devlin about her inspiration for the work, and how her work as a visual storyteller has developed throughout her career across stage, music and art. Susanna Boehm, Head of the Art Department at the Bregenz Opera Festival, discusses High Tide for Carmen, a special installation in the Theatre and Performance Galleries at the V&A. The installation shows Es Devlin’s stage designs for Carmen, which was presented on a huge scale on the lake stage of Bregenz this summer. In our first artistic project for The Fifth Sense, a partnership between Chanel and i-D, stage designer Es Devlin considers the philosophical idea of scent - conjuring a multi-sensory world within an immersive installation created in Peckham, Southeast London, inspired by Chanel Fragrance. Viewers online can experience the installation via the film she has created for the work, a "video sculpture" exploring the idea of the loss of control, an analog for the way scent bypasses the front of our brains and can immediately access emotion, memory, time and place.
