A beautiful mind seemingly bent on destroying itself. These are Shane MacGowan's best and worst moments; sometimes it is difficult to tell the difference between the two. "Shane Patrick Lysaght MacGowan (born 25 December 1957) is an English-born Irish singer, songwriter, and musician. He is best known as the lead singer and songwriter of Celtic punk band the Pogues. He was also a member of the Nipple Erectors and Shane MacGowan and the Popes, as well as producing his own solo material and working on collaborations with artists such as Kirsty MacColl, Joe Strummer, Nick Cave, Steve Earle, Sinéad O'Connor, and Ronnie Drew." "You were pretty Queen of New York City" When the band finished playing They howled out for more Sinatra was swinging All the drunks, they were singing We kissed on a corner Then danced through the night The boys of the NYPD choir Were singing 'Galway Bay' And the bells were ringing out For Christmas day "You're a bum, you're a punk" "You're an old slut on junk Lying there almost dead On a drip in that bed" "You scumbag, you maggot You cheap lousy faggot Happy Christmas, your arse I pray God it's our last" The boys of the NYPD choir Still singing "Galway Bay" And the bells are ringing out For Christmas day "I could have been someone" "Well, so could anyone You took my dreams from me When I first found you" "I kept them with me, babe I put them with my own Can't make it all alone I've built my dreams around you" The boys of the NYPD choir Still singing "Galway Bay" And the bells are ringing out For Christmas day #ThePogues #FairytaleOfNewYork
From The Late Late Show - Tribute to The Dubliners March 1987 This is the first performance of their hit single - The Irish Rover which reached number 8 in the UK singles charts. It was Eamonn Campbell who came up with the idea to record a song with The Pogues for The Dubliners 25 Years Celebration album that he was producing at the time. It was Barney McKenna who thought of the song. One of the great collaborations.
Shane MacGowan and Sinéad O’Connor on songwriting, touring and mortality. Shane MacGowan wrote the song ‘Haunted’ for the soundtrack to the 1986 film ‘Sid and Nancy’. The film focuses on the relationship between Sid Vicious, bassist with punk band the Sex Pistols and his girlfriend Nancy Spungen. Originally performed by The Pogues, Sinéad O’Connor and Shane MacGowan recorded their version of the song in 1992 and it was released as a single in 1995. Shane knew both Sid Vicious and Nancy Spungen and while ‘Haunted’ is emotional and sad, It’s happy in a way cos they’re reunited somewhere else. Both singers have fears about their own mortality. Sinéad O’Connor finds herself worrying over, What are we all doing here, how does the earth hang in space and what’s going to happen to me when I die, is it going to be slow and painful. She does not think that Shane McGowan’s choice of lifestyle makes his life more difficult than it needs to be as everyone makes their own rules. What’s difficult for you might not be difficult for Shane. As song writers both have different approaches. Shane McGowan takes inspiration from anything, be it a memory of something that happened, or something he was told, I like a few drinks and like I’ve had a good few ideas for songs in pubs. Sinéad O’Connor often writes songs on plane journeys. Her songs are personal and songwriting is how she talks to herself and tries to find herself. Shane still enjoys performing and is about to go on an American tour. Its the most exciting thing you can do, play a good gig. Sinéad is also about to tour, but it is less easy for her to do. I’m a mother also so I’ve got to put a bit of time in there too. This episode of ‘Kenny Live’ was broadcast on 22 April 1995. The presenter is Pat Kenny.

Shane MacGowan & Christy Moore accompanied by The Benzini Brothers (The Hothouse Flowers) perform the Irish ballad ‘Spancil Hill’ . The song was composed by Michael Considine from Spancil Hill (also written ‘Spancilhill’) in County Clare, Ireland. Born circa 1850, he emigrated to the United States around 1870 with a plan to work and make enough money to bring over his sweetheart Mary McNamara, ‘Mack the Ranger’s daughter’ in the song, so that they could be married. In the ballad, the writer dreams he has travelled to his home place the night before the village’s famous horse fair which is held every year in June. Observing the people who have gathered for the fair which is to be held the following day, he also visits old neighbours and of course his true love Mary. At the time the song was written Michael Considine had made his way to California. By 1873 his health was failing, and in the realisation that he would never see Mary again sent the poem home to his nephew in County Clare. Gay Byrne's Late Late Show 1994

Meer blogs van Jack: 🤍 Rainy night in Soho: - I've been loving you a long time Down all the years, down all the days And I've cried for all your troubles Smiled at your funny little ways We watched our friends grow up together And we saw them as they fell Some of them fell into Heaven Some of them fell into Hell I took shelter from a shower And I stepped into your arms On a rainy night in Soho The wind was whistling all its charms I sang you all my sorrows You told me all your joys Whatever happened to that old song To all those little girls and boys Now the song is nearly over We may never find out what it means But there's a light I hold before me And you're the measure of my dreams The measure of my dreams Sometimes I wake up in the morning The gingerlady by my bed Covered in a cloak of silence I hear you in my head I'm not singing for the future I'm not dreaming of the past I'm not talking of the fist time I never think about the last Now the song is nearly over We may never find out what it means Still there's a light I hold before me You're the measure of my dreams The measure of my dreams
